The Second Line Parade

by Hot Tomato on July 30, 2009 · 1 comment

in Events, Kids, Music

The Second Line Parade for this year’s Tomato Art Festival will be led by Halfbrass with a special guest appearance by the Shack Brown Drum Line from New Orleans.

Born under the influence of classic New Orleans tradition, Halfbrass creates festive atmospheres out on the street and all the way back to the stage by mixing second-line brass band music with funk, jazz and rock. Audiences love Halfbrass for its unique sound and party-like shows – in its first year, Halfbrass was named a “Top 5 Local Band” by The Nashville Rage.

The parade steps-off at 9am from the corner of Holly and 11th Street. It follows part of the 5k run course and then ends at the Main Stage on Woodland between 11th and 12th Streets.

Dress up in your favorite tomato (art) costume, bring an instrument to play, and let’s hit the streets!

For questions about the parade, contact Dave Thomas or Joyce Kisner, both at 262-8035.

Tomato Bumper Sticker Winner

in Info

A quick update from the head tomato, Meg MacFadyen:

Well, folks, this was a real knuckle biter of a contest!

I had to count and recount because it was so close, but in the end the official winner of the tomato bumper sticker contest is……

“EAST NASHVILLE, GETTING SAUCIER EVERY SUMMER!”

Congratulations! Tia Thomason, you are the winner of the following prizes:

  • An I Dream of Weenie hot dog
  • A sneauxball from the Jolly Rogue
  • AND a bumper sticker with YOUR WORDS on it!

Really, this is like the tomato Oscars, if you ask me!

Now, because it was such a close contest I am going to try and print some of the other great ideas that almost won. As a runner up, each person listed will receive the tomato bumper sticker of their choice!

Here they are, and I hope to get at least one (if not all three) printed:

2. “I (picture of a tomato) East Nashville” (Congratulations! James Vavra & WRYKER for submitting this idea…you deserve a prize!)
3. “East Nashville…Eat, Drink, and Tomato” (Congratulations! sarahmclowe@gmail.com you are a winner!)
4. “You Say Tomato, I Say East Nashville!” (Congratulations to Katherine Falk, Eric Jans, and Seth Brown who all had this great idea!)

I received several very wonderful ideas after the deadline, so it looks like next year’s contest is already underway….

Thanks for playing everyone!

Tomato Art Fest bumper stickers will be available at the Tomato Art Fest.

Again this year, children of all ages are invited to the Tomato Art KIDSFEST, a celebration of community fun just for kids (and their families)!

KidsFest — sponsored for the fourth year by East End United Methodist Church — will take place in the park at the corner of 12th and Holly Streets from 10am-2pm on Saturday, Aug. 8.

FREE activities will include:

  • Inflatable fun (including a water slide!)
  • FREE “tomato head” hair painting
  • FREE balloons
  • FREE kid’s craft sponsored by FAIRYTALES BOOKSTORE
  • Everyone is invited for FREE popsicles as well.

The Old Fashioned Dunking Booth will be operating again this year. There will be a charge to take tosses at our “dunkees,” with all of the proceeds from the dunking booth to benefit the YMCA Community Action Programs (Y-CAP). So step right up and take a couple of tosses to benefit Nashville area children! Donations for Y-CAP will also be accepted.

Boy Scout Troop 3, Tennessee’s oldest continuously chartered troop, will also be back again this year providing camping demonstrations and offering grilled hot dogs, chips and cold bottled water for sale. All families are welcome to come and join the in the celebration!

For more information, contact Josh Baker at 942-9777.
